From the 50th Reunion Committee
Our Reunion Committee has been hard at work preparing for
our 50th reunion. The committee has recommended, and the
Class Board has approved, that we:
1. Schedule the reunion for the weekend of October
14 thru 17, 2010.
They considered the four weekends when home games were
scheduled. Two weekends, October 28-30 and November 11-14,
were rejected because of conflicts with USNA Homecoming and
Presidents Circle Weekend. In both cases we would have
difficulty obtaining access to tailgate areas, the USNA golf
course and other areas necessary to conduct a successful
reunion.
The weekend of September 9-12 was also considered, but
concerns about potentially hot and rainy weather
suggested we select October 14-17, 2010.
There is potential conflict with the always popular
Annapolis Boat Show, but the weather should be considerably
more moderate. Our 45th was held during a Boat Show weekend,
and it didn't become a major problem for us.
2. Use the moderately priced DoubleTree Hotel
as our host hotel, and book rooms at other nearby hotels to
supplement our needs.
We considered higher end, close in hotels ranging from $300
to $350/night as many other classes are selecting, including
the Marriott, Loews, Westin, and O'Callaghan's. They do have
the advantage of being within walking distance of the Yard
(0.5 to 1.0 miles), but parking and bus transportation to
events would be difficult or impossible. It was also felt
that most classmates would prefer lower cost alternatives.
We also considered Country Inns and Suites, the host hotel
for the 45th Reunion. It has prices comparable to the
DoubleTree, but offers only 90 rooms and is further out than
the DoubleTree.
The DoubleTree is the former Radisson Hotel, which was
also used for the 45th Reunion as back-up. It is now owned
by Hilton, and has been completely remodeled. The hotel has
moved more upscale, since it is located near the newly
developing Parole Town Center, which will offer shops,
restaurants and an in town atmosphere. It offers 150 rooms,
as well as a hospitality center. It has a good arrangement
for handling our buses and free parking (all of the high end
hotels have parking charges for the few spots they have
available). We have negotiated a firm price of $209/night.
It is next door to a smaller Best Western hotel that should
cost somewhat less than the DoubleTree. As we believe we
will need to block out about 250 rooms, we would expect to
book rooms there as well. This could consolidate our bus
loading site in one location.
Another option: If enough interest is shown, we can a book a
block of 50 rooms @ $199/night at Historic Inns of Annapolis
www.historicinnsofannapolis.com for those who would
prefer a close in location within walking distance of the
Yard, with the proviso that we will not be able to
offer bus service to those hotels. Any classmates who would
like to stay at Historic Inns of Annapolis, should send a
e-mail indicating that preference (no firm booking required)
to John Michalski at
navygoat@comcast.net. We will
book the 50 rooms if enough interest is indicated.
We expect a great reunion!
